Math Workshop centers

Math Workshop-Centers

Yesterday was our first official day completing a rotation of math centers!!! Monday through Thursday, our math routine is a focus lesson, followed by 45 minutes of centers and wrapped up with a group share/check in. On each of those 4 days, students will rotate to 3 centers-teacher center, math mat center and the game center for 15 minutes each. I have found that this is the best way to structure math lessons because it ensures that I have time to meet with every child everyday! We spent a great deal of time beforehand problem solving and talking about how we can help ourselves and others as math students during this time. This is incredible important because they will need to use tools and problem solve independently while I am with my group. So far so good! When I surveyed them at the end, they loved the new centers!!!

Science Fun!!!

Living Things

We started our living things unit a few weeks ago and it's been fun seeing science come alive in the classroom! We planted bean seeds (which so far haven't sprouted and it's been two weeks-We're replanting today in the hopes that giving them richer soil will produce better results! Our little scientists studied seeds, both inside and out, as well as set up experiments to investigate how the parts of a plant help it grow. We visited our outdoor classroom, collecting seeds, examining a variety of leaves and flowers, and getting inspired to write poetry about all the living things around us! Here are some pictures of our adventures!

Baby Vallee

Watch out...the class has been buzzing about talk of babies and siblings...some kids were so excited, they wrote persuasive pieces about "getting" a new baby brother or sister!

Well today, we celebrated one special baby on the way...Baby Vallee! The class read, When I Was Little, by Jamie Lee Curtis and were inspired to write their own memoir of babyhood! Listening to the stories was wildly entertaining (even for the class who laughed out loud about the "artwork" I left for my parents on the wall of my room when I was little)! Each student had a chance to storytell and then create a page for our class book. Mrs. Vallee came in today and each author proudly read his or her story!

All your friends in J13 cannot wait to hear the news about the arrival of Baby Vallee! Congratulations!!!!
